Default New to us 2005

New to us 2005 green GLS, TDI with DSG transmission. It is a certified used car with 47,000 miles purchased at the local VW dealer.

My wife has always wanted a Beetle and I have been lusting over the mileage the TDIs get, so when we came upon this we could not resist. The old 1993 Explorer was getting scary to drive and it was time to get rid of it.

If and when the sun ever comes out again, (we live in western Washington State) I’ll take some better pictures. Don’t expect any great mods on this, we are both close to retirement age and like just as is. I did order a TDI badge to put on the back, but not much else will get done.

We have always owned either Ford’s or Chevy’s so this is our first foreign/German car. My wife keeps asking me: Why did we wait so long buy this? I have no good answer. We almost bought a 06 NB TDI in 2007, but the kid was still in college and we really didn’t need a new car and payment then.

Oh, as for a name, Little Green Apple, aka LGA is in the lead, but nothing final, yet.
Foxy is the name. LGA lost out.

Have you had a chance to check the mileage? I've got an '06 TDI DSG that has been very disappointing...we've yet to crack 40 mpg.

Not yet. I have only put fuel in it once and was in a hurry, early morning dark and I did not get a full tank. When I do get some mileage info, I'll post it here with more pics. IF the rain ever stops and the sun comes out waiting... waiting...

woo-hoo!! Another 05 TDI! Happy driving! Daisy has almost 70,000 miles, seems weird just to type that.

Nice clean looking TDI!
Just some friendly advice. You have a PD (Pumpe Deuse)unit injector diesel engine. These engines are very dependable but require a specific oil that meets VW Spec. 505.01. Be sure that you always have your service dealer or independent service shop use only 505.01 oil without exception. Get in the habit of using a diesel fuel additive like Power Service that is readily available at auto part stores and Wal-Mart. Diesel fuel very often does not have a high enough cetane rating (similar to octane rating for gas) and VW recommends a cetane of 49 for the PD engines. The additive will raise the cetane level and provide more lubricity to the fuel for cleaner and very low soot combustion.
Not sure how many miles you have on it but, when it is time for the timing belt change, be sure to have it done on time and have the tensioner, water pump, serpentine belt and motor mount stretch bolts all replaced. This is an interference engine and if the timing belt fails while the engine is running, it will very likely grenade the valves into the pistons and render the engine to boat anchor status.

So, enjoy your NB diesel and take care of it as recommended and you'll get years of economical and trouble free driving.

CGK, It had 47,000 mile at purchase. While I’m aware of this information, it cannot be stressed enough that the proper oil be used and scheduled maintenance be performed on time. Thank you.

I go to the dealer Wednesday to pick up splash guards I ordered and they are suppose to provide me with a history of maintenance that has been performed on this car. As it is a certified car, I was told that all fluids due for change at the time/mileage of certification had been done. I’m going to quiz the service department and find out what I can about how they service TDI’s and this might give me an idea if they are full of BS. The car came with a 90 day/3,000 mile warranty.

Default Washed and New Splash Guards

Here is LGA all clean and new splash guards. Not real impressed with the way they look, but several places we drive tend to get muddy and mud gets thrown all over the side of the car.

I think I prefer your '05 tail light arrangement better than my '06. '06 must have been the first year for a wacky big clear bulb in the taillight that does...nothing. The backup light is a little bitty affair down lower. Can't see squat with them.

Btw, somebody vandalized your license plate.

I'll have to look at the 06, I can't recall what they look like.

After I got the new tabs in the mail and put them on, all the numbers and letters went back to normal, it's like government magic.

Thanks you, it is a sweet little car. My wife has kind of laid claim to it, so I still have to drive my pick-up.

I think diesels would be more popular in the US if we had some to choose from. VW is the only consistent supplier of diesel passenger cars and even they took two years off, 2007 and 2008. Rumor is, later this year they will sell the Rabbit/Golf with a TDI option. MB has been hit and miss with diesels and I guess this year BMW has introduced a diesel 3 class I think.

My other cars are a 2008 Ford Taurus and 1994 Ford Ranger pick-up. I can only imagine how nice they would be with a diesel, but US auto makers refuse to have anything to do with diesel unless it’s in a big pick-up, ¾ ton or bigger. And they wonder why they keep losing market share.
