  1. Water Leak......again

Questions, Issues or Problems with the New Beetle
That sounds like the cabin air filter box. Good job getting down there to it. That's where mine was leaking as well. Much like the metal panel(s) you had to remove to get to it, it has an adhesive strip on it that seals it in place. If the leak comes back, pull that plastic box and reseal it...
  2. Stalls after start

    1.8 Liter Turbo
I bought a genuine vag maf, installed, runs great. I had already ordered and installed the breather tube, maybe next time I'll call 034, thanks for your and everyones input as always. Stealership note: $250 + $53 core, not in stock. VW Parts Vortex $168, delivered to same dealership or +$7...
  3. Need help changing spark plugs on 2004 new beetle convertible

    New Beetle Convertible
Bentley pg 03-38 says the bgd is the same procedure as the other 2.0's (-aeg), and says nothing about removing the intake manifold. It does however state that it may be necessary to unplug the injector wire and gently turn the injector in the mounts for access. No first hand knowledge here...
  4. 2001 vw beetle 2.0 manual kills power to engine while I’m driving

    2.0 Liter Gas
Try unplugging the maf sensor and see if the problem goes away. Mine was stalling and doing the rpm cycling thing and that was the issue, no codes thrown. You can run it without it for a limited time but it'll run rich, foul plugs and ruin your cat if you do it for too long. Sometimes they can...
  5. Stalls after start

    1.8 Liter Turbo
Solved. It's the maf sensor. Quick diagnostic is to simply unplug it and see if it runs. Unplugged mine and it started and idled. Thanks as always, everyone. Billymade, those billet breather tubes look AWESOME but I have the redheaded stepchild APH engine and the part # doesn't match up. : /...
  6. Stalls after start

    1.8 Liter Turbo
Thanks guys. I'm tuned also but it was by previous owner so I don't know the specifics (grr). That cycling business said vac issue to me but my other (not tuned) ran steady with virtually the same issue. I'll get that done and see where I stand. I did find that the metal diverter valve' s screw...
  7. Stalls after start

    1.8 Liter Turbo
High voltage fuse panel "looks" Ok, and the battery is under a year old and holding 12.6v after all the cranking. Accessory belt was replaced last year and looks fine. I'll keep this suggestion in mind and dig deeper but I decided to remedy this split crankcase breather tube first. I have it out...
  8. Stalls after start

    1.8 Liter Turbo
Mornin dubbers. 2000 1.8t aph. Drove good 5 days ago but my mileage has been poor (23mpg). Filled it with gas, drove 12 miles, shut it down, restarted it 20 minutes later, drove a mile, parked it. 5 days later it starts then stalls. If I "save" it by depressing the gas pedal about 1/8 I can get...
  9. Coolant continually low and daughter complaining of burning plastic smell in car.

Questions, Issues or Problems with the New Beetle
Seconding all the above advice but wanted to add that I THINK if the inside of the oil cap has a foamy sludge on it that it is a sign of coolant in the oil. Good luck on the diagnosis and fix!
  10. Car dies while driving

    New Beetle Convertible
Here's a thread with similar issues discussed: https://www.newbeetle.org/threads/random-stalls.29861/ Interesting that a failing cps doesn't throw a code, per this poster. Having a code reader is very necessary for these cars if you do your own wrenching. Vcds is the best but expensive; for...
  11. Factory height of a 2000 beetle?

Questions, Issues or Problems with the New Beetle
I think you'll find your answers here: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newbeetle.org/forums/technical-modifications/2420-what-stock-height.html%3famp=1 If you opt to change the diameter of your wheel setup keep in mind that your speedometer and odometer won't be accurate. Mine looks to sit...
  12. Suspension

    1.8 Liter Turbo
You might get a better response in the mods section of the forum. And I hope I don't anger anyone by saying there's the vwvortex forum where more than just beetle owners hang out. Since different engines have different weight, you might also look into the weight of each engine, the stock front...

  14. Water Leak......again

Questions, Issues or Problems with the New Beetle
Common issue. There are many threads about water leaks if you search. Imo, in short, if you remove the top center dash panel, the panel next to it on the offending side, and the metal plate you find underneath that panel (which is screwed in but also has an adhesive seal) you'll find a flat...
  15. Mk4 / A4 gauge cluster face swap

    Styling Modifications
I found your video on adding a faceplate on top of the existing one which helped quite a bit, but as much as i search for things i must not be using the right keywords often. Thanks for that vid though, and glad you linked here so maybe future searchers will get the whole picture ahead of...
  16. FAQ: Tools to do the Job

    Technical How-To
Bumping this post from 2006 because my beetle's almost 20 years old and this was a super handy list for making a bare bones tool kit i can keep in the car and I'm a preparedness fan. I added a flashlight, a spark plug socket, a generic obd2 code reader, spare bulbs, jumper cables, a mini sharpie...
  17. What did you do for your beetle today?

    The New Beetle Experience
This morning I learned how to use vcds to change the soft code of my instrument cluster so that the speedometer now reads closer to accurate. This issue has annoyed me since 2003, so I'm extremely pleased.

  20. Mk4 / A4 gauge cluster face swap

    Styling Modifications
My car was born in Canada and came with a km/h faceplate, which I removed and replaced with a mph faceplate. I had purchased a used cluster which I couldn't install so I scavenged the faceplate from there. It was scary, but it worked with no parts casualties on either cluster. I left my active...
