After 45 minutes of finessing with my largest maul and a 80 lb sack of gravel to attenuate the sound enough for earplugs to be effective, successfully un-inverted the skid plate. Put on some Wolfsburg Tuning door handles, fresh oil and filter, new Bosch purge valve. Got some air on a logging road šŸ˜„

When the a/c blend door is in as rough shape as Bark Beetle's, a foam dust geyser erupts the first few seconds "defrost" is selected. Stings the eyeballs! Not sure if it's much less nasty than disused skin. Today I received the plates I ordered back in November/December.

The red on the package shelf is a little strong for me, I know I would be distracted by the reflection in the rear glass. You sparked an idea for a potential fiberglass project though! A shallow tub/basin under each of the red carpeted spaces would be handy space for smaller items. At first...

Got another blue mark IV Picked up a 2003 Golf TDI, 5 speed ALH, new companion to the Bark Beetle. My home is becoming a sanctuary for roosters and blue cars

New wheel/tire combo on the Bark Beetle: 15" steelies with Yokohama Geolandar G015's in size 205/70 R15. Approximately 19mm or 3/4" increase in ride height, similar decrease in tire/fender gap of course. Approximately 4kg/9lb increase per corner over the 16" alloys and tires I removed. 46.4lb is...

I'm looking forward to your next update on the seat project, drag79stang. You've been putting in some good work on your beetle! I sent my ecu out to get a tune for the 2.0, got some 15" steelies from a 2003 golf to the tire shop for the Bark Beetle's new shoes. I've got some Moog 81055 rear...

Looks like a fun project and event! I'm meandering in a similar direction with the Bark Beetle as it's my forestry work "truck". I haven't changed wheels or tires just yet, I'm all springs so far. What has been the net effect of your combination of taller tires and spacers on front scrub...
  9. Basic mods for performance

    2.0 Liter Gas
I agree with Smileybug, there's not a much to gain without spending quite a bit. The OEM air filter is sized very generously for the 2.0. The fuel filter can make a difference in how well the car runs, especially if it's not been serviced before. Fresh fluids all around, transmission...

Bailed some water out of the left rear footwell, ordered new sunroof drain tubes, prepped the A-pillar gauge pod for paint. Crimped and soldered some jumper wires to equip GM DIS ignition coil packs to the 2.0, readied a transmission temperature sender adapter for installation.

    Technical Modifications
I did my interior lights and puddle lights with "warm white" led's from superbrightleds.com. Here the left puddle light is led, incandescent on the right.

Thanks for the tip on using sump pump hose for the SAI hoses, billymade. The last couple of posts in this thread prompted me to inspect the pressure side of the SAI, and to discover that one of the two "ears" on the exhaust manifold end hadn't clicked in fully. It seems there is a learning curve...

DEA/MRC part # D5 A6929 replaced the existing motor mount. Much less movement now when I try to rock the engine by hand. The mount I removed was likely original and the metal insert which bolts to the engine side fell out during removal. Black Forest Industries stage 1 transmission mount...

I too had a P0340 "pending" after my recent camshaft install. The cam position sensor was plugged in but didn't "click". A quick squeeze of the connector clicked it into place and no further cam sensor issues. I used a paint pen to color the timing reference marks on the timing covers and the...

New injector O-rings and thermal intake manifold gasket for the Bark Beetle this afternoon. Got the valve cover loosened for my next opportunity to advance this project.
  16. Side quests during camshaft installation?

    2.0 Liter Gas
Got the last of the parts (hopefully!) ordered. A NewSouth Performance thermal intake manifold gasket will be another "while I'm in there," addition to this project. I have a similar product from Hondata on my S2000, and I like it a lot. In that application, it reduced eat soak phenomenally...
  17. 2005 crashed bug

    Transmission Talk
Going on the model year alone, your daughter's bug is likely equipped with the 4-speed 01M transmission. You can confirm what transmission the vehicle is equipped with by consulting the white sticker under the trunk carpet near the forward left corner of the trunk, just lift the carpet as though...

    2.0 Liter Gas
At the start of the thread, you mentioned having cleared out the sunroof drains and confirming good flow. I had some thoughts while working on another task that I thought I'd share: given the both the age of the drain tubes and the reputation of VW plastic parts or modern automotive plastics in...

Thanks for the HVAC pics, userbronco. This is on my to do list! Just installed the Dieselgeek Panzer plate & Full Metal Jacket yesterday. It's a well thought out piece of engineering; everything lined up nicely on the first go. I'm hopeful that going from no factory plastic deflector or side...
  20. Headlight Issues...stuck on one, broken lever on the other.

    2.0 Liter Gas
I recently had the headlights out on my 2001, here's my assessment: Take a look at the metal "can" which holds the headlight assembly catches, toward the front of the car where it meets the radiator support/front clip. You should find a tab where the can is secured to the radiator support with...
