    Rebuilt, or USED? Very strange for a rebuilt engine to be listed with the miles on it. The miles are irrelevant on a rebuilt engine.

    Personally, I would drop the pan, change the filter, refill with correct fluid, and refill properly before doing hard parts. It doesn't cost much.

    Make sure you run proper 5W40 synthetic, and, use the oversized Passat 1.8T oil filter (I use MANN).

    The problem with getting under it AFTER you turn it off is that the oil will flow and you may not see where it actually originated. Don't be afraid of being under it, take the proper precautions, and find your leak. If you're nervous, leave it to a pro, running, on a lift.

    Put your car up on ramps. Get under it. Take off the splash shield. Clean off the bottom of the engine with brake cleaner. Let it dry. With you under the car, have someone start it. Watch where the leak appears.

    Ok, I totally understand. I'll revise my list. 1. A thorough LONG test drive that goes through all temps, and uses all gears many times, as well as top gear highway cruising. Watch for any slipping, and watch the tach carefully on the highway. It should be dead steady, not moving 1-200 RPM...

    If you buy an automatic VW, it will end up a non-driver. Teach her manual, or buy a different make.

    1. Look for a manual transmission. 2. Not kidding. 3. See #1 4. When you find one with the manual trans, replace the timing belt/water pump/tensioner/idler immediately.
