Wife has a 02 new beetle 2.0L and it has the common issue where the signal starts clicking on its own without even using the blinkers its random.

I read briefly that I can simply remove the top and bottom column covers without removing the steering wheel and air bag and clean spray the clicker contacts with contact cleaner. Is this correct? Thanks

The contacts inside the column does fail, with the switching mechanism/assembly of the turn signal stalk and they cause the problem; here is a link, that should be helpful and shows how to repair the issue.
