Salutations,

My wife is complaining the low beams on her 2006 New Beetle Convertible are very dim. I took the housing out of the fender well and there are 3 bulbs in it, 2 H7s and one that looks like a side marker bulb. With the engine on, the low beams (the ones on the top of the housing) come on (I was told when we bought the car that they are driving lights that run the low beams at "reduced power"). When I turn on the headlight switch, the only thing that happens is the little side marker bulb comes on kind of a sickly orange color.

I measured voltage at the low beam bulb socket - 13.4 volts. It does not change when I turn on the headlight switch - always 13.4 volts.

Both "running light" bulbs are lit so I know the bulbs are good.

The high beams work all the time just like they're supposed to.

If I pull on the parking brake, the headlights go out (like they're supposed to) and releasing the brake brings them back on.

What SHOULD the voltage be when the headlights are supposed to be on low beam (rather than the DRL mode)? Is there some sort of relay that should be kicking in to increase the voltage to brighten up the DRLs into actual low beams? Or do I just have an aiming problem (groundhog spotting) instead of being properly aligned?

Shining the lights on the garage door, I get 2 pools of light roughly the height of the headlights so I don't think its an aiming problem.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi there. I have the very same issue with my 2005 CNB. The outer lenses on mine were crystal clear (no yellowing) so I was confused why there was hardly any light coming out. I bought bulbs but ended up with so many other things going on in my life that I decided to pay a reasonable mechanic to replace them while he was doing other work. He called to say it's not the bulbs. There is a lens inside the outer lens. He turned on the headlights and whammo -- sure enough you could see that the inner lens was completely cloudy/foggy -- and it didn't allow the light to come through. I have to replace the entire headlight assembly on both sides. I'm pretty sure that's your issue too. Since I bought the car used I'm trying to figure out if I have a Turbo S version -- any idea how to figure that out? Good luck -- if you're reasonably handy it should be an easy fix for you.
