My 2004 New Beetle convertable Check Engine Light (CEL) came on and had the Codes: P2187-Bank 1 system too lean at idle and P2279-Leak in air intake system. I erased the codes, Check Engine Light went out but CEL came back on after driving car different amounts of time and various distances. Scan showed same codes: P2187 and P2279. Reseated gas cap and cleaned MAF Sensor same codes came back. Checked for vacuum leaks and couldn't find any. Finally went to VW dealer who diagnosed problem to be one of the Secondary Air System Check Valves was broken and that one of the other valves was ready to break. They replaced both the One-Way Check Valves and checked Fuel Trim and it came back into specification.
Check Valves located at end of pointers in photo.
This would have been a very easy fix if I could have found the defective valves myself. Dealer charges for Diagnostic Check, $95, total Labor cost, $123.50, and cost of Check Valve, $51.80each.
Part number for VW Vacuum Check Valve is 058-905-291-K and is listed on Amazon for $33.30.
Hope this information helps. Woodrow
