I bought my 1999 Beetle in April. The check engine light came on about a week later. We had the codes read and replaced the Co2 sensor/ The light went off, for about a day. I rode around with it like that for about 3 months, then took it to a VW dealer. They came back and told me it was a bad temperature sensor and replaced it. The light was off, for less than a week.

I have searched online and see that A LOT of owners have check engine light problems.

Can anyone tell me if this problem can be fixed and the light be off - for good?

I love my car, but this makes me want to re-sell it and get something else.

Did you get a copy of the diagnostic scans? I know when I scan my NB's there are always multiple codes and some are false positives. Dealers and most shops will take the easiest course; i.e. start replacing the inexpensive parts and work their way up the list.

Find someone in your area with VCDS (aka Vag-Com) and have them scan your NB.
