1999 new beetle won't start

car was running fine but turned off one day on me. tried to turn on and didn't work, left it alone for five minutes and it ran fine and dandy. a week later, i fill the tank with gas and drove home. I got home fine and it gave me no trouble, even on the freeway. tried to turn it on the next day and it failed. mechanic came and said it was just a loose wire. he turned it on and off like ten times and it was fine. drove it to the store two hours later and didn't want to turn on again, had to tow it home. hasn't been working since then. any help?

The connections in the fuse panel above the battery box and the ignition switch are two things that come to mind. When it won't start, do the interior lights come on when the door is opened?
