Hello Guys,

I have a 2008 2.0 with only 53,000kms. At 40,000Kms I put new OEM spark plugs.

Just recently, every morning when I start the engine is sputtering and rough running. The engines want to die but I give a little gas, and run rough like it is only firing on two or three cylinders.

When it gets to the normal operating coolant temperature it runs without any problem and I can use the AC.

Its only give me this problem on the first start of the day.

Does not have any MIL light on the instrument panel. I scan it with VCDS-Lite and do not found any fault codes.

The only thing that’s come to my mind is to change the Green Coolant Sensor.

Any other advice?

THX for your time and help

That sounds similar, to how my new beetle acted; when, my coolant temp sensor was bad. What is strange; is that, usually there is a trouble code when they die.

How is the coolant temperature light acting?

Here are the coolant light modes:

Steady blue temp light = low coolant temp
Flashing blue temp light = electrical fault in coolant monitoring system
Flashing red temp light = low coolant level
Steady red temp light = overheating

What brand and part number; were the spark plugs, that you replaced?

What is the history of the car; has it been running ok lately and have you done any other work to it?

You might take a look at the obd II part of VCDS and see if there is any pending codes.

"Mode 7 pending DTCs" (I don't know; if this available with VCDS Lite)

(7): Pending DTCs are fault codes that have been identified by the ECU but are deemed not yet critical enough to trigger the MIL.

Ross-Tech: VCDS: Tour: Generic OBD-II Screen

fuel trim levels; would be nice to see as well:

Fuel Trim Info - Ross-Tech Wiki

Is that the complete scan? It looks like; it only read three computer modules?

I did note the "Labels: redir fail" error:

Hello billymade

I also check for codes with OBD II FUSION APP and no code.

I put exactly the same spark plugs I remove from the engine. I got them at the VW dealer. Part No 101 000 033AA

Car has running perfect and just recently develop this problemo. I have not done any work.

I have never use this, how exactly do I use the OBD part of the VCDS.

Yes, this is the complete scan

I did note the "Labels: redir fail" error:

Yeah, I also see that Redir Fail but I dont know if that have something to do with not finding any fault codes. Any idea?

Tomorrow I will going to buy a coolant sensor and see if this cure the problem. I will keep you updated.

Thanks for your time and help.

That is exactly how my NB runs when I have Valero brand gas in the tank. It will run fine on anything else. With Valero, if it sits for a couple days without being started it will run rough for about a minute after a cold start. There is a strong smell of gas in the exhaust. Holding it at 1500 rpms will smooth it out until it goes away. Others will tell you there is no such thing as sticking fuel injectors, but I don't know what else could be happening.

My wife and I know not to fill the NB at Valero. Recently the same thing happened again one morning when my daughter had been using the car. I asked her if she had bought gas at Valero. Yes was the answer.

Hello

So today I went to VW & AUDI dealers in another car in order to not start the 2.0 engine and not getting hot.

Neither of them have the Coolant sensor. So I just bought from them the O Ring for $15.00 :(

Went to a aftermarket place and got the Coolant sensor for $10.00

The sensor my engine use is grey with 2 pins part No. 06A 919 501 and I bought the same one since the green one have 4 pins for the electrical connector.

Piece of cake installation in less than 5 minutes.

Start the engine and it started immediately without any problem (No sputtering neither rough running) I turn on the AC and works OK. :D

Since the problem is only on the first starting of the morning, I will check it this week to see if this fix cure the problem.

Here are some pics of the old parts.

I will keep you guys updated

THX

Good! I hope; that was the problem. When my coolant temp sensor was bad; the engine was hard to start, the engine would stumble/hesitate, idle rough until warm and it would run rich (black residue around the exhaust tip). A new one; cleared up all those issues. :) I still find it odd; that you didn't get a trouble code, maybe it hadn't failed all the way or enough to throw the code.

While, your problem maybe fixed; here is a good video, explaining how the CTS fails:

Just to let you know; the OSSCA is a aftermarket brand from CHINA; so, keep your eye on it, at $10 the quality might be low. Let us know; how the CTS works out for you.

I would think; the sensor would come with a o-ring in the box. $15 for a o-ring from you vw dealer is insane! Here the Coolant Temperature Sensor Seal - N-903-168-02; is less than $3!

If this China sensor fails, I will order the OEM from USA. I live in Central America and it takes around 10 days to get to here.

Here the VW & Audi belong to the same owner and they are thieves! The guys that sell the China sensor does not have the O Ring so thats I bought it at the stealer

Well this saturday I also took time to replace the wipers electric water pump (The one that goes at the base of the water reservoir) It was also OSSCA brand $14.00 and also replace the master window switch thats goes on the driver door $32.00

Thanks billymade for your time and help
