2000 beetle 1.8t auto no reverse

daughter stuck in snow rocking back/forth...now has no reverse...forward works fine....took to shop and they just told her it needs a trans and all they do is new???? I am thinking solenoid or band or that type problem...can those items be checked w/o removing trans? car has 200k and I don't want to spend tons of money on it....thanks

I am going to assume you have the 4 speed auto. These are well known to self destruct.

Water may have gotten into one of the plugs on the tranny and shorted. You can also drain the trans fluid and replace, inspect the fluid and magnet on the pan for metal shavings.
Also, your valve body may be shot, this is the cheapest fix just shy of a new trans. There are plenty people that are or were in the same boat... maybe they will chime in...

Nothing kills an automatic trans quicker than rocking in the snow. If you were not there to see what what going on, you would be surprised how aggressive people can get with a car.

Not sure what to tell you here, car has 200k, trans has lasted about as long as you could expect.

Assume it is 4 speed?

Not sure the car is worth putting the money into it, sell it as it and move on, otherwise you are looking at probably $2500 at a minimum as you probably need axles anyway once you look under the car.
