2000 beetle ignition problem

Hi, I'm new to the group and to owning a Beetle
This morning, I tried to start my car. I put the key in the ignition switch and turned it on to let the glow plugs warm up. I must have waited too long, as when I turned to crank it, it tried to start and wouldn't go. I had to turn off the car completely in order to try and crank it again.
The problems happened right there. The key turned (too easy,mind you), but all the dash lights stayed on. The key wouldn't turn anything off. The car stayed "on". I could take the key out and turn it easy. I assume it's a cylinder issue.
Is it easy to replace? Or is there another issue I am missing?
