I just bought a 2000 Beetle 2.0 automatic. It intermittently slips going from 3rd to drive. Any suggestions as to the cause?
Next how do I tell what tranny it actually is?
And will a Jetta trans. fit as a replacement?
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like possibly a valve body problem. If you search around here, you'll find a bunch of threads discussing it.

At best you need to have your valve body reworked, at worse you will likely have a major transmission job in the future.

The way to determine what is in your future is to drain the fluid and pull the trans pan. Really pretty easy on these cars.

If the trans pan, filter and magnets are pretty clean, and the fluid does not smell cooked or burned you are in pretty good shape.

If your trans pan, filter and magnets look pretty bad, then a trans is likely in the future.

If your pan is clean, expect about $550-$700 for a trans valvebody rework and expect to put a trans wiring harness in as well if you DIY, more if you take it to a shop.
