I'm just learning about the sludge & oil pressure issues working on my daughter's bug. Odd thing, the light never came on till I changed the oil. (Euro) Mobile 1 0W-40. So far I've replaced the pickup tube and cleaned the pan. Valve cover needs some cleaning but the cams & head don't seem bad IMHO. I'm posting pics of the cam lobes in order from the back (left to right) and the front (left to right). I am concerned with the wear front lobes on cyl 2 & 3 but wanted to get the opinion of someone who has seen a few of these.

Roll with it. The engine is clean compared to some I have seen.

Good way to clean the sludge off easily is Easy Off Blue oven cleaner!

Chances are that the 90 degree fitting that connects the PVC system into the crankcase is cracked and need to be replaced. When the crankcase vent system is not working properly the engine oil and and will contaminated easier and faster.
