I own a 2001 new beetle, 1.8L, standard transmission. Love the car and the way it handles and hugs the road. Do NOT like the fact that I've replaced the catalytic converter three times. Now, my gas mileage is down slightly and I'm getting a check engine light at times. Code tester revealed: P0420 - "catalyst efficiency below threshhold - bank 1.
Comments? Experiences? Suggestions?
Many thanks,
Mary

Cats don't wear out. They go bad due to something not working correctly. Start with evaluating your fuel and ignition system. If you are running rich or lean, your cat will be damaged.

Not entirely true. The early cats on the 2.0 AEGs were junk parts and would just fall apart. I know mine did. They even had an extended warranty issued on them.

But the failing this much, definitely sounds like a problem somewhere else down the line.
