Hi all,
My daughter just bought a 2001 new Beetle GLS. The car only came with the valet key, which works fine. We brought it to the dealer to have it checked out and have them make new master keys. They did so but both of the new keys set off the immoblizer (they lock/unlock, engage/disengage alarm, etc. just fine). Meanwhile the valet key still works perfectly.

The dealer says they think the instrument cluster is going bad, but unfortunately VW doesn't make these anymore. It also doesn't make sense to me because the valet key works fine, and I'm worried they are just fishing for expensive fixes.
Any ideas? I've attached the error codes they found below.
Thanks, Eric

Welcome to the great and wonderful ORG! Many fantastic cars, people and answers lurk in this great land. If you haven't done so already, take time to fill in your profile and post a few photos so we can ORGle them!!I wish I had answers for you but only have experience from what I've read here. I know based upon my past experience with a bad key that the dealership has to pair the new keys to the car with the VAG Com port. They should have been able to do that for you. There are many key threads here if you do a simple search you should be able to confirm. As for the list of codes, I'd get another opinion for them before getting work done.

I had this code; you can spray some electrical contact cleaner in the switches and it fixed mine, I didn't need to replace it. I think the contacts; get dirty and contaminated over the years.

Here is the contact cleaner I used:

CRC QD Contact Cleaner Aerosol

CRC's QD Contact Cleaner is a must for any shop or garage. This cleaner is designed for use on sensitive electronic equipment and is plastic safe. Use on your Mass Air Flow sensor, electrical connectors, fuse blocks and so much more. 11 oz aerosol.

02130 -- QD® Contact Cleaner, 11 Wt Oz

Available at most auto parts stores.

You can look up trouble codes here:
