Hi guys,
New to the forum and just bought a 2001 UK spec Cyber Green 1.6 Beetle for the wife that has a few little problems. This is her second Beetle, she used to own a 2.0 that also had a few problems.

I will go through the list, lol.

1. When starting the car from cold, it makes a jet engine type noise for about 20 seconds then disappears? It happens when the car has been sat for hours and is cold again. Possible water pump impeller noise?

2. The heaters work, but the heating is warm when driving (blue water dash light on) If the car is stood in traffic, the heating gets hot? (blue water dash light goes off) Once driving again it returns to warm with the blue light on again. Possible thermostat? Or water pump? (See above)

3. The yellow warning light with ! and curved arrow around was on, but has now gone out? Engine check light appeared and scan code was P0101 (MAF Sensor cleaning or replacing?)

4. there was another fault code when we first got the car that has now disappeared P0172 System Too Rich Bank 1?

5. Rear tailgate does not open via the key or door switch? The lights flash using key and i can hear the relay under the dash clicking when pressing the door switch. I can open the tailgate by using the key under the VW badge. Is this most likely a broken wire under the tailgate trim panel? Or fuse/relay 2 79?

6. Pressing the ESP switch would not light up the dash warning? But after the yellow warning light went out, it now works again when pressing the ESP switch the light goes on and off as it should?

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Found from a bit of research that the jet engine sound from a cold engine is the Secondary Air Pump or hoses leaking.

Luckily quite a simple fix by removing the rivets on the pump and resealing with new bolts, or replacing a damaged pipe.

This is most likely causing the engine light and fault code.

Logged the car via the obd port and it looks like the engine is only getting to 67c at normal operating temperature? Would that be why the heaters are not that hot?

Would a stuck open thermostat be the likely cause?

Thanks.

After more live data logging, it seems to be the thermostat. The max temp it reached was 74c with average temps of 68c so it is running about 16c to 22c cooler.

Also managed to fix the tailgate release. Pulled the rear panel off and found that the connector had fallen off the actuator. Also fixed an interior bulb and ordered a 36mm festoon bulb for the drivers door light.

A few more things to fix, exhaust leak, new thermostat, new secondary air pump, missing light in the boot, third brake light has a few bulbs out, front number plate screws, aerial missing, and a piece of dash trim to the left of the ESP switch is missing.

Still have obd code P0101 appearing after clearing though.

Is this the correct part number for a 2001 1.6 Petrol Beetle Temp Sensor? 06A 919 501A

I just noticed that there has been an oil leak and the sensor and wires are covered in oil. Also there seems to be a plastic pipe that is damaged or has been repaired.
