This is my 2003 TDI... owned since new (Nov 2002)... it currently has 555,000+ km on it and was restored Nov 2014-June 2015, which included a complete disassembly of the body, removal of all rust and new metal replacement... and custom bare metal paint... the VW hood logo, "Beetle" across hatch, and stripes are all painted and airbrushed, no decals...

Mods include:
1) 17/22 turbo, 2) 216 injectors, 3) Malone Stage 4 tune, 4) limited slip differential, 5) SB stage 3 endurance clutch, 6) rebuilt transmission (manual), 7) Raxle "bullet proof" axles, 8) high performance head gasket with ARP head studs, 9) SS turbo back 2.5" exhaust with SS 2.5" downpipe, 10) SS braided oil line, 11) 3 Bar MAP sensor, 12) Aluminum skid pan, 13) Bernt wiper cowl, 14) Bernt 3 gauge instrument pod (the Bernt products were very difficult to source), 15) NewSouth Boost, EGT, Oil Temp gauges, 16) 18" O.Z. rims with custom paint, 17) Colt Cam Stage 2, 18) Eibach front and rear sway bars, 19) Adjustable Eibach springs, 20) Koni shocks...

Here is a picture as it was in summer of 2003... and yes those are the same rims as I have today... de-chromed, pits filled and painted... had to get new centre caps from Italy, but that is another story..

Here are some pictures of the rebuild... in addition to the mods already posted, it has HID headlamps, and led fog lamps with a Philips controller that makes them my DRL's...

Also has stemless tire valves, which are a pain when you need to check pressure, but I think look great...

Wheels are skinned with Yokohama Advan Neova AD08R 225/40/18...

The outside stripes are mirrored inside the car and the centre dash is painted the same as the roof...

For sound I have the original radio with a spatial amp that makes the sound seem like it is coming from a space wider than the car, and it also drives a 10" sub mounted in the spare tire...

I had started to go with flames, but switched to fade as it gave us better control all the way around the car...

Also had to build new window channels as the original ones had rusted too badly.

And we filled in the Bernt logo on the instrument pod...

It is now it its winter hibernation concealed in a dust cover which is covered by a CarJacket which completely encloses it... and 5lbs of desiccant under the car to keep it dry...

Some additional pictures...

The front splitter needed to be mated to the VW front mask as they were not meant to be used together... the mask was found in LA by my local VW dealer and appeared to be the last one left in the world... there was a lot of careful work with a dremel... in the picture it looks like it might be one piece, but it is not... the original mask that I had on the car had to be removed for the rebuild and since it was bonded on, it came off in about pieces and could not be reused...

The rear valance was much simpler and is part of the body kit with the splitter and the side pieces...

And finally it is in it winter cave till next April, along with a lot of Detroit muscle...

and the colours are GM Competition Yellow, Lexus Black, a custom transparent orange fade, and the silver stripe was all airbrushed in with highlights...

Oh hell no!.... Rob Van Tass is the craftsman that did this, he did all the body work and the bulk of the paint, and brought in an airbrush specialist for the silver stripe, the hood VW, and Beetle on hatch... If you are looking for a great craftsman in the Toronto GTA, I recommend him with no reservations... I supplied ideas, parts, and money...

Just got caught up on your beetle's chronicles. WOW!
It's too cool taking a walk through a build/project. A labor of love for sure. :bigthumb:

Hey buddy, where in Ontario are you? close to the U.S. border? Man, it sure would be cool to have you join us in May for the Tail Of The Dragon cruise/weekend. There seems to be a Canadian contingency growing that will be making the trip. I'd sure love to see this rolling art in person.

HI,

Not sure that is doable... that is a long dangerous drive for this paint job :)... We are about 100 km north of Toronto...

We are just transitioning from living on land to living on a boat, so a lot of things have moved into storage as we start the hunt for the right catamaran... will need to see how our time is next spring...

Regards, Rick

No worries, Rick. Hope our paths will cross in the future. It would be mighty nice to meet you and your bug.
