One day the hatch wouldn't work. Tried fuses and such. Saw things about water coming in the trunk light. Took apart the latch twice. Checked connections. Used a battery to run motor that seemed stuck. Took motor off bracket and pry it apart. Hit with the power and it blew apart. Found the pieces and put back together. Rewind spring some. Now it seems to be working. May need some grease too sometime. Actually unlocks better than it was. Just glad nothing was burnt up. I got lucky the spring didn't fly apart.

The old grease inside those actuators gets crappy, cleaning and regreasing is the way to fix them.

I think a. DIY would be nice or after 20 years, a replacement?

I decided on a replacement. $11.95 from ebay. Direct from China. I was worried, said free shipping. Took 3 weeks for the slow boat from China. Then it ended up in Illinois where they put a postage stamp on it. I got it and it was the oem part with a vw Logo and Brand new. Works like a charm now. Oh and I siliconed around the third taillight so the leaking didn't ruin this motor!!! I'm a happy vdub guy again!

Good work; Glad you got it fixed! So, after all this; the latch actuator, ended up being bad?
