I have a faulty instrument cluster for a 2005 New Beetle Convertible that needs either repair or a EEPROM data swap with a new/used cluster of the same model. I'm having a lousy time trying to track down a like for like cluster anywhere on the internet atm, and all the places I talked to about repairing it have said they can't clone it, if it's a no-start issue.. Which seems kinda odd.
Issue found with the cluster:
Instrument Cluster gets voltage (+12vdc) to the harness at pins 1,30, and 20. also several of the warning lights seem to blink alright, however all of the gauges stepper motors don't operate at all, and the digital Odometer is blank and non responsive. The vehicle is generating the OBD2 DTC: (U0155) No communication from the Instrument Cluster to ECU. The vehicle will turn over when started but immediately dies, likely due to no immobilizer signal from the cluster as a result of it malfunctioning.
My question is there any flexibility with cluster swapping as far as the Part # and vehicle year and trim go? Like for example, the cluster I NEED has a part # of 1C0920951L, while I can't find one that hasn't already been sold to save my life. I've been finding a bunch of clusters of the same year, and engine, only the part number is 1C0920951. Only difference is that it drops the L at the end, and I've also found some that have part # 1C0920951N as well.. Does the cluster number have to be identical letter for letter, or could I make one of the clusters without the 'L" at the end of the part # work?
Another issue I am running into, is since the cluster isn't even communicating with the ECU, even when I throw a VAG K+CAN Commander on the OBD2 and try to read EEPROM hex data via K-line protocol for the Immo or the cluster itself, I cannot connect to it.. it just times out on multiple attempts. Although it connects to the ECU just fine. I was trying to at least retrieve the WTS pin number off the thing if nothing else, but would have been nice to grab odo reading and any other relevant data for cloning..
So I'm just trying to find out what other options I have for getting this rigg back up and running again.
