What trouble code, were you getting; is this car a sedan or convertible? From what we have seen; many of the later 2.5L models, have the fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter integrated into one part, inside the gas tank.

Billy, the beetle is a sedan. What trouble code, were you getting; is this car a sedan or convertible? From what we have seen; many of the later 2.5L models, have the fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter integrated into one part, inside the gas tank.
if you have the metal tank with the screw studs and fuel pump plug on top with wires going into the tank fuel pump assy you indeed have the CA emissions tank, your fuel filter/regulator is in the tank behind the pump assy. it is not the best place for servicing but that's where it is. also if you develop leaks in the tank they are almost impossible to find a replacement and the labor to remove it is more than the car is worth. I had a bad pump in mine and had to replace it but no my tank has some hairline cracks in it and leaking and i tried everything short of removing the tank an having it welded. My Cheaper fix is a 10 gallon racing fuel cell mounted in the spare tire compartment and an inline filter and pump, problem solved. My daughter's 2009 Beetle is running rough. Scan tool indicated a bad fuel pump. Location of fuel pump is under rear seat, but wanted to replace fuel filter too. Online forums and YouTube say fuel filter is just in front of rear passenger tire at rear of gas tank. Crawled underneath searching numerous times. Not there! Traced fuel lines going forward and aft underneath. It's just not there! Confirmed engine is BPS per label at spare tire. Read that BPR (california) fuel filters in gas tank, but this is BPS, so it should be external SOMEWHERE!
But WHERE? Included is Data sticker and Sideview of car. If someone would indicate WHERE fuel filter is, that would be GREAT!
