2016 Beetle Interior Lights

If the lights can turn on with the switch at the "on" position, but they don't turn on when you open the door, It could be a problem with the microswitches in the door lock mechanism, Another indicator the lock mechanism is bad is no warning tone when leaving the lights on when you turn the car off and open the door. I had this problem with my 2000 Beetle.
