I have a '98 with a manual transmission. I have been having peiodic problems shifting into first from a stop. Occasionally it seems like the shifter wont go into gear, I can feel the gears grind and the shifter wont slide in. If I pump the clutch and try again, it usually works fine. Any ideas?

the symptoms sounds like the synchomesh gear for 1st is wearing out - because what you describe is how a non-syncro transmission works.

could also be that your linkage is worn and you need to readjust it.

head over to www.dieselgeek.com and read the install/adjustment instructions for the audi TT short shifter.. they have excellent written directions on adjusting the linkages inside the engine compartment.

good luck! I think my 2000 NB with 72k on it needs this done as well. I get the same problem as you occasionally.
