My 99 beetle Manual transmission will not go in reverse. reverse is first gear and first gear is 3rd gear. Is there a linkage adjustment for the shifter ?

Sound like the "Shift Carrier" is broken ... here is the DIY for that ...

I'd say more linkage adjustment than shift carrier. I know when mine broke, I lost all gears but 3rd and 4th.
