ITS A 99 GLS 2.0 BEETLE TODAY THE ABS CAME ON AND WENT OFF WHEN THE CAR WAS SHUT DOWN. LATER IN THE DAY IT CAME BACK ON TILL THE CAR WAS SHUT OFF AGAIN. TONIGHT IT CAME BACK ON ALL THE WAY HOME FROM THE SHORE. AND WHEN WE MADE A STOP CLOSE TO HOME THE RED BRAKE LIGHT ON THE DASH CAME ON AND FLASHED AND BEEPED FOR ABOUT A MIN. THEN WENT AWAY ABOUT 10 MINS LATER IT DID IT AGAIN. COULD THAT MEAN LOW BRAKE PADS SENSOR . I KNOW I NEED REAR PADS AND ROTORS . I BOUGHT THEM TODAY THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY INFO :confused:AND I AM GUESSING THAT THE ABS LIGHT MEANS IT THREW A CODE CAUSE THE AST TIME ABOUT A YEAR AGO THE ABS CAME ON AND WAS BBEPING THE SCANNER SAID ABS UNIT WAS BAD SO WE RESET IT AND NEVER SAW IT AGAIN

Dejavu! I just had he same thing happen to me yesterday. I looked it up and I believe is your ABS module. I have the same year bug as yours. There is a thread that talks about this. Apparently, from 98-04 the ABS modules that came out were not the best and tend to malfunction just like ours did. The solutions is this company that fixes them for $200, buy a new one(way too expensive) or go to a junkyard and get one from another bug. Try doing a search.

My ABS lights has been on for a loooong time now! same is up with my wifes 2001 (brake light blinking, and if you have ESP that light will come on eventually as well!!) Tried the "fix", but this did not work. Buying a new on, very expensive.

There is also a bunch of different models so make sure you've got the right one check this website:

It is a big job getting it out and in again, and after this you have to set the steering angle sender and bleed the abs braking unit and brakes.

In South Africa the dealers will replace it for R17,000-00 /$2,328

The cheapest I could get it so far is above wesite Euro 220

Well As Long As U Can Drive It With The Abs On And The Brake Light Blinking On And Off And Binging. I Guess We Dont Have A ChOIce. But I Was Told That If You Have REAl Low Brake Pads And Rotors. That Happens As A Warning With The Brake Light Flashing. Cause The Brake Fluid Is Low Due To Low Meat On The Pads And Rotors. I Have The Pads And Rotors And Gonna Do Them This Weekend. So I Hope This Helps The Brake Light And Binging I Can Deal With The Abs Light on But the Binging Has To Go :d

Have been driving with ABS light on for almost 5 months now!
Your car will still have all of its breaking ability, the only problem is when you hit the brakes real hard - the car will skid as ABS is not functioning.

I changed the rotors and brake pads last weekend as they needed to be replaced - this did not help for the light, but then again mine was in to be fixed - so the ABS unit is probably completly stuffed! Hope changing them solves your problem:)

Mine only bings when I start the car and the break light flashes the whole time (annoying)does yours bing all the time?

no the light flashes and bings then goes away and then comes back after a lil bit but the abs light when it comes on it stays till the car gets shut off and then its gone when u start it it is not there for a while then its back

well i really dont wanna to post this :D cause i dont wanna jinx the car :) but we replaced the rear rotors and pads and my buddy used a wire brush and cleaned off the disc on the back of the rotor area which is used foir the abs cause its magnetic and it was real rusty dirty ( you should have seen the crap that came off) but he put it all back together like new and drove it for over a week and everthing seems to be ok with hard and soft braking so maybe that may have been the whole problem  thanks for all the help

My ABS light comes on and goes off. sometimes it doesnt come on at all. could it be i just need new rotors? i have to get the hood fixed so i cant get the brakes fixed until i pay on my credit card. shew. anyway, just wondering. the abs light has been on and off for about a week. darin (bf) said the rotors felt rough and i needed new ones. could it jsut be this or more? i have the sensors in my brake pads but tis been maybe 2 years since i had those replaced (cant remember exactly).

sorry to hear that:( .

I,ve forked out the moola and ordered a new ABS Control unit.

If you run a Vag-com it will probably say "brake solenoid switch faulty" This switch is located within the ABS control unit, and that is the "FIX" that has been referred to earlier in the thread. 1 out of 10 times it can be fixed.

The best option is to run a Vag- com crazi_daisy and if you get these results it is probably the problem.

I've been studying this problem for the last 6-7 months trying to figure out the cheapest fix:rolleyes: , unfortunetly there is only one - a new ABS control unit!!!:)
