Are there any CARB legal cold air intakes for a base 2001 vw new beetle? I have the base 2.0 L engine and have not had any luck in finding any. Trying to buy one that's street legal so I won't have to worry about replacing the stock air intake when I smog my vehicle. I'm aware of only a few CARB legal cold air intakes and they are all for the 1.8 L turbo gasoline and the 1.9 L turbo diesel. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

The Neuspeed P-Flo intakes are CARB legal. They don't add any hp, all an intake does on a 2.0 is make noise. All MK4 VW's use the same panel filter and my friend is using the stock airbox on his 500+hp turbo R32 so there's no way the stock airbox is a restriction on a 2.0. No restriction = no gains when swapped out for a "better" part.

If you just want more aggressive engine noise you could either cut / "swiss cheese the lower airbox:

Or you could install a deck plate into the bottom of your airbox which would let you thread the plug back in if you ever change your mind or have trouble passing emissions.

Either mod would be done to the bottom of the airbox so it would be invisible to MVI inspectors which makes it CARB legal right? :)
