You're in Good Company, fglass!

You're in good company, fglass!

;)

My wife's 2000 NewBeetle GLS's airbag light came on about 6 months ago for no apparent reason. Had to take it to our mechanic who had his airbag specialist check it out. Cost us about $150 to get fixed...don't remember details right now...

Was OK until about a month ago, then one day the light came on again!..

I told my wife that we should bring it in again, but so far haven't gotten around to it....she's scared to death of having the airbag go off, so I think she likes having it non-functional...

It's actually most likely still fully functional, depends on the fault.

With the 03, the most common cause is a faulty seat belt switch. I'd imagine you're still under warranty?

With a 2000 model, the most likely cause is a seat harness.

Good luck to both of ya,

Isn't your car still under warranty? If so, the dealer can easily read the DTC and determine the cause of the air bag light. I can't recommend that you drive around with an air bag system that may or may not work.

my 04 had the airbag light come on. Took it to the dealer for fix under warranty and they ended up taking the passanger seat out and doing something to it. Probably the weight sensor. They (german dealer) even called the factory in Wolfsburg about it.

on my beetle I had the airbag light come on and they just resetted the code and that's all they did, I don't remember if there was something wrong with it, but they said if it came back on to take it back to them. I don't know why it just came on, I just think somethings like to come on and make you worry.

If I was you slugo, I would take it in again and ask them what's up with that. There might be something in the wiring or something I would think, but it's just wierd that this is the second time that it went off. I would make sure it's not a recall that they don't know or something. If alot of other beetles are having their air bag light going off more then once then I would tell VW about it. that shouldn't be right, to have it go off again and agian.

Just wanted to say that on my '99 2.0 that I've had the airbag lamp light up twice. Took it to the dealer each time. First time it was a harness, second time it was an ignitor. Dealer said it wasn't covered under warranty but informed me that I might get some "consideration" from VW of America Customer Care. VW of A not only paid for the repairs with an "direct authorization for repair" to the dealer, they mailed me a check for the $90 I spent for the first hour's labor. I was SHOCKED! VW has always taken good care of me. See if they'll pay for yours...

I've had mine go off twice (both times after filling up with gas which makes me wonder whether it is the gas door release switch/connection).

First time was a low voltage signal from the airbag.
Reset with Vag-Com and no issues.

Second time was the driver's side seat-belt with an intermittent signal.
Reset with Vag-Com and sprayed with circuit board cleaner.
No further issues.

Mine comes on and stays on on start only in cold(cool weather). Goes off when restarted. When I took it to the stealership they told me no codes found. I gave up and just live with mine...Any ideas???

Airbag light

Mine came on for the 3rd time, over a year ago, a week after having my 40k service done. Since I already droppped $500+ I never brought it back to have that checked.

For the first 2 instances, I was covered by the warranty. They both involved the spring assembly in the steering wheel.

Right now Benny is having body work done (accident 2 weeks ago) maybe they'll see the airbag light on and fix it as well.

I spent $100 to get my stupid airbag light reset  What a waste of money! Maybe Alan can contact VW and get them to give me money too :p
Well, Gina, I guess that, for you and some others, the process is going to involve bypassing the dealership and going straight to VW Customer Care. I imagine that VW of America is more interested in keeping you as a happy customer than the dealership is. I sold cars for 5 years in the 80's and I know that there are VAST differences in the way dealers treat their sales and service customers (though, publically, they all say that they will deliver to you the best customer service). As odd as it may sound, VW of America has more at stake in your continued satisfaction as a customer (call your local dealer's service department and ask them for the number for VW Customer Care)...

It's been my experience with VWOA is that they could care less and back whatever the dealer says even if it is totaly wrong. Has happened twice in 3 months. Even more so when they will have to spend a dime on an issue.

airbag light

my airbag light is on in my 2000 beetle, the dealer says the airbag harness in the drivers seat needs to be replaced and it'll cost $800.
I called VW of A, and got a call back from them a half hour later, saying they've carefully considered and researched my case and come to the conclusion my car is too old and they can't help me out.
