I had the motor running and opened the filler cap for the oil, and I noticed that air was pulsing powerfully through the opening. I was thinking this may be a plugged pcv valve, but I thought I would check here first, since this is our first VW. Is this normal for the 2.0 for air to be pulsing like that?

It is normal for the 2.0. There is no conventional PCV valve. The only crankcase ventilation is through the hose running from the plastic piece under the oil cap to the intake hose. There is a check valve in the fitting on the intake hose that only allows flow out of the crankcase.

Thanks for the info. That is the first time I have seen that much air pressure on an engine while running.
