Just finished up my clutch in mthe 98 NB TDI. Put the battery on and noticed the "BRAKE" and Coolant lamp were lit up as well as the battery lamp. Took the key out and they were still lit so I started it up. Bad idea.

I took the key out and the steering wheel locked but the damn thing was still running! I had to put it in gear and stall it. Damn diesels...

Does tihs sound like a bad/stuck ignition switch?

Thanks,

Garrett

Or wires fried behind the switch. Worse than the one pictured.

The backside will look like this.

The burnt wire on this one is terminal 30 at the ignition switch. This wire feeds the load reduction relay. The brake light switch, the Monsoon amp, serviced through S242, and the Coolant Fan Control Module, serviced through S16, are all serviced by this lead through bolted connection 501. This is a problematic thing with the NB. No one is for sure as to why.

You can read more about the resolve, if this is the problem, here -
