I am in the process of replacing the lower ball joints on my 2000 NB and have a question. Is it necessary to separate the drive axle from the steering knuckle to gain access the top nut of the ball joint for removal, since the drive axle is practically on top of the nut, or can you remove that top nut by using the appropriately sized open end wrench?

I've seen both approaches in some of the DIY threads on other forums and in my Haynes manual. I also have the Bentley manual and there is no procedure listed. Thanks.

Yes you can access the nut using an open end wrench, but use a good one or you will round off the nut. Put some liq wrench on it a day before you do it. Pickle fork works to seperate it from the Hub. Dealer wanted $65 to replace it, took me all of 15 min to change. Not sure on how you are supposed to torq to 33 ft/lbs though.
