I have a noise in the LF that I 'think' may be the ball joint.

What size is the nut that holds the ball joint to the bottom of the strut?

I'm asking so I am sure I have a wrench that will fit it and I don't want to jack up the car remove the wheel just to check the nut size. Easier to ask, I'm sure someone will know.

Thanks,

Thanks

You will need a properly calibrated torque wrench for this job.

There are three 13mm bolts part#(N 101 277 07) under the control arm to the retainer plate on top part #(1J0 407 175 B) and 19mm shouldered self-locking hex nut part #N 908 088 01. For the 13mm a socket will do. The 19mm is in a tight space so I'd say an open end wrench or a sharp hack saw if your so inclined. The 19mm use (Teflon) one time use only.

Torque Specifications (Check your Bentley or Haynes Manual)

Do not reuse the 13mm bolts or retainer plate. Get new parts. There inexpensive.
Balljoint-to-control arm bolts (the three 13mm bolts)
Step 1 20Nm or 15 Ft-lbs
Step 2 Turn an additional 90 degrees

The new balljoint will come with a new nut, and get a new one with teflon if it doesn't.
Balljoint-to-steering knuckle nut (the 19mm nut)
45Nm or 33Ft-lbs

.
Thanks, I have all the tools + the torque wrench. Thought it might be a 19mm nut but wasn't sure.
