The other day, when I was driving home, the blue water temp. indicator seemed to take longer than usual to go out. Then, after it did go out, it came back on for another 1/2 mile or so and finally went out when I stopped at the mailboxes and let the car idle while I got our mail. It's colder her now than it was a couple of weeks ago. Is this normal for colder climates?

Once it goes out it should stay out. It could be several things, but my first guess would be the temp sender is on it's way out. It's a cheap (like $8) part - make sure you get the o-ring too. You don't need any tools to replace it, and if you do it with the engine stone cold, you'll lose little to no coolant either.

If it's not this, my next guess would be a faulty thermostat, but for $8, I'd try the temp sender first. If you have a VAG-COM and know how to use the measuring blocks, you can narrow it down even further.
