both low beam headlights went out, how do i replace them...2005 beetle

You can't reach the bulb with the hood open. You actually have to take the entire headlight assembly out. Its not difficult at all. Click here for the how to.

After you get it out, the black cover comes off and you're right there at the bulbs .

When you go to buy your new bulb, the correct type is H1. If you do not have time to get the bulb right away, you can swap your highbeam bulb for your low beam bulb for the time being but you will NOT have a high beam if you need them. Just FYI.
