My 2001 beeltle is showing some issues with the brake pedal.

When it comes to braking the brakes are very hard and I have to push very firmly to get the car to stop.

It almost feels like there is no vacuum pressure at the brake booster so I am just braking with my foot (no servo help), however the brake pedal stroke is still very short.

I checked all the brake booster vacuum lines (I had already done maintenance there 1 yr ago and I know the lines fairly well) but I do not see any leak.

I see after the vacuum port at the engine intake there is a Y shaped plastic valve where 2 hoses split, one goes to brake and one goes down (not sure where).

Can something be wrong with that valve? Or should I look at replacing the brake booster?

Does anyone have any idea or suggestion?

Thanks
