hi...

Just bought a used 2002 Beetle w 31,000 miles, 5 speed manual trans for my wife. It's extremely clean, used sparingly only in the summer months & stored in a heated garage during the winter (I live in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan). The only problem I have been having is the dashboard "brake " light goes on/off intermittently. Doesn't seem to occur when I'm braking or if the parking brake is engaged. I looked at the brake fluid & it looks like it's at the right level, but it's hard to eyeball. I don't think the brake fluid has ever been changed. My brake pads & sliders look like new & the car brakes really well. Any ideas other than to take it into a dealer?

thanks..

First, congrats on your excellent find! A '02 with 31k miles. Almost a new car!

Second, Welcome to the Org! Haven't seen your User ID here before. Here's a little something I put together for all the Newbies and for those who don't know it all about there Bugs

Now about your indicator/warning light. I'm going to assume this is the light that illuminates the work BRAKE in red. There is a separate indicator wear pad indicator icon that illuminates in yellow. See your vehicle specific warning and indicator lights below (capture from the '02 NB Owner's Manual).

The sporatic illumination of this warning would, as stated in the manual, indicates low brake fluid (it is a level sensitive switch and has nothing to do with fluid quality or pressure). When this light is illuminated (by the low fluid switch) the system WILL throw a DTC (Daignostic Trouble Code),. The equipment at the Corner Auto Parts may or may not be able to pull the stored code. You may have to have this read by a VAG reader. You indicate you are having trouble reading the level, not sure why.

If, on the other hand, the light is coming on because of a faulty ebake warning light switch, this can easily be checked. the next time the light is on, check to see if your DRLs (daylight running lights) are on. The switch sends a signal to the Daytime Running Lights Change-over Relay and if the switch is working properly and the indicator is illuminated the DRLs should not be. Also, the next time the light comes on, depress the e'brake lever button and push down firmly, the switch may be right "on-the-line" and thus be causing the light to come on.

If both the brake fluid level, and the e-brake switch are good, then there is a possiblilty the brake fluid level sensor is bad. This can probably be diagnosed with a VAG-COM.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, for the quick reply. Yes, the color is red. I haven't pulled the cap off the brake fluid container, just tried looking thru the plastic container. I'll bring it to one of the quick change oil specialist to see if they can check the fluid level.

Just cover your ears when they tell you that you need windshield wipers. I quit going to quick lube joints because they ALWAYS come get me and explain how my car is about to explode and needs wipers at the very least. They look dumbfounded when I tell them I replaced the wipers not two weeks ago.

I'm not sure, as I have never had occasion to check mine, and there is nothing in the Bentley, but I believe there is a dip stick built into the cap.
