I have had a P0016 code, 2003 VW New Beetle 1.8T. My fiance changed the cam shaft position sensor and the code went away for a while, however it has returned. I took my car to the mechanic just to see if there was something wrong that I was not aware of they said it's just the sensor and I have a couple vacuum leaks. These sound like pretty simple fixes and I would really like to avoid spending $700 dollars on something we could do ourselves. My question is when installing the cam shaft position sensor do the cylinders need to be in Top Dead Center. I've been watching videos on how to replace the sensor and some just take the old one out and put the new one in, like my fiance did and some say to make sure it's in TDC. The mechanic also told me it's off by 17%, could this be a timing issue other than the sensor, that's what I was originally concerned about. Or is it more likely we got a bad part, it was pretty cheap?
