car door lock problem 03 beetle

hey everybody, first time on this forum!
my 2003 1.8 turbo beetle has problem with the driver's lock.
i purchased the car from a friend 3 months ago, the remote was already not working but now even the key doesn't work properly.
when i lock it it locks the doors but when i unlock it the handle does not work, the pin will come up and down but the handle doesn't work.
this happen only when the door it is locked with the key; if i leave it unlocked the handle works.
any help ?
it is very annoying because if i locked the car the only way to go inside the car it is opening the passenger door:-(

I had to replace the door handle on my daughters car and found that there is a little plastic piece that would hook to the handle and as you pull it, it would operate the mechanism inside the door. It has ridges on one side that also sits on the door handle inside. I wonder if that has come undone?
You could take out the lock and you would see the item that the arrow is pointing to. If you pull on that, the door should open and the mechanism inside should be working properly. Hope that helps.

Had this same problem with my 2001...it was the power door lock actuator. Bought new from auto parts store and has worked well since.

thx a lot for the reply, was it easy to replace? one friend of mine restore the locks with his computer and worked fine for a couple of days but now it is doing it again
