Cause it was designed by Germans, and not Americans. :)
I don't think they drink or eat in their cars. Possibly a cultural phenomena I dunno.

I don't really mind the lack of drink holders except when I'm sent to a place to pick up food for someone.

I think the best center console is 2006+. Which is plug and play, plus you can use your armrest (if you have one) e-brake handle and power sockets. All you would need is just the center console and the back cup holder. The center console run about $130 new and rear cup hold about $30.
I just bought a 2002 Beetle (manual) and my center console is a piece of crap. I need to replace the whole thing. I am having trouble finding the entire assembly. I saw that I can use a newer model console. I am new to all of this and I need as much assistance as possible.

I found a video on youtube of a guy swapping his O5 for O6 console.

he used this website, but when I log on there is two options. one that says a pre-06' conversion, and one that is just to replace it.
they both look the same, I cant see any difference but theres a huge proce difference.

anyone have any clue?

I noticed that too. The black "kit" is much cheaper as well. I think the difference is that the kit comes with the covers, inserts, plug, etc...
What did you end up doing? I want to do this for my 98 TDI, but not sure what to do about the armrest, which my NB doesn't have.

Reviving a dead thread. I'm going to be doing this change hopefully this weekend (if I get the parts in time). I'll document if anyone wants to follow along. I do have a convertible, so I will have to order an additional part (I don't need the console cover, I need the console trim panel that holds the power top switch).

Since nobody will be sitting in the back seat I probably won't buy the rear cupholder right now. The damn thing is $73.00 CAD (the entire console is $83.00 CAD!), so I can't justify that cost right now.

Well....no replacement this weekend. Apparently the 2006 console has no inventory in North America. So It'll be six to eight weeks before I see it. :(

I took out the armrest years ago because when up it prevented me turning around to the kids in the back, when down it prevented me accessing the brake properly. I had been looking for something that can be used to plug the hole (perhaps creating a storage container rather than a blanking plate). My current issue is that I had to get the parking brake repaired and this meant removing the center console. The plastic is so old and bad that it collapsed and split. Does anyone know if there are replacements that are made from a better grade plastic for later models that fit? I am not that bothered about cup holders, just strength and looking good.
