center wheel caps...size?

Just bought a 2006 2.5L NB. One of the center VW logo caps is missing. See different sizes on ebay 55mm, 56mm. Mine measure 56mm measured on the outside. Do they screw in, snap in? The recess in mine looks rather 'boogered up'. Bill

center caps

They do snap in and out. However, the only safe way to remove them is to push them out from inside the dismounted wheel. There is no real lip to get a small thin screwdriver under the edge without some damage to the cap rim. The 56mm outside diameter of the cap itself is just the start of info you need. Turns out the retention ring just behind the cap can vary in diameter from 51mm to 54mm. Then the finger tabs also vary; some are thicker and have a larger O.D. too. The larger ones of these did not fit my 2008 wheels. To further add to the confusion, VW sourced these from several countries, including Italy, Germany, Lithuania and Latvia, and others. Even if you buy some from China, they still say "made in Germany". So, good luck.
You might look at your old caps; to find the correct part number and order them that way. Otherwise, you might try the vw wheel database and the center cap part number, is listed, each according to the specific VW wheel listed. Check out the database here: (look at "center cap part #")

My newly reacquired Turbo S is missing a center cap. Lo and behold, a search lead me here. There is a typo for the Delta wheel center cap, however. The part number listed at the link for the cap has the first zero looking like the lower case letter O. The part number should be 1J0601171BXF. Further searching elsewhere suggests the BXF extension has been replaced by ULM and XRW, which was important when I couldn't find BXF anywhere.

What a great resource this place is!
