I've gotten this code for the last 2 or so years but I clear it and its good for another 500 to 600 miles. I know what the code means but can't figure out the cause. The car runs perfectly fine and gets good milage too. All the vacuum hoses seem fine. I've already changed a few including the one to the FPR. I've also changes the MAF sensor and post cat O2 sensor. Makes no sense that it goes so long before coming on. It also never seems to come on while cruising but at low speeds like parking etc. any more ideas?? Thanks in advance.

This is what I found on Ross Tech:

16556/P0172 - System Too Rich, Bank 1

Possible Symptoms
Irregular behaviour

Possible Causes
Fuel system
Excessive fuel pressure
Leaking or contaminated fuel injectors
Leaking fuel pressure regulator
Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel
Vapor recovery system
Air leaks after the MAF
Vacuum leaks
Improper seated engine oil dipstick
Stuck EGR valve
Oil overfill
Cam timing
Cylinder compression
Exhaust leaks before or near HO2Ss.

A lot of people are hanging out on Facebook and post there. Perhaps now that colder weather sets in there hopefully will be more traffic in the Org. ;)

You can find the Facebook org members group by searching...new beetle "the collective"- a newbeetle.org group". The group shuold come up.

Thanks for the info. So much for a code being able to lead you to a fix! Why bother giving us a code if it can mean 65 different things??? I'll just let it be and erase the code every 600 or so miles as it comes up. Car runs great.

I was finally able to get the damn pre-cat O2 sensor out and changed it as well. What a PITA! We'll see if that helps.
