Hi, I recently bought a 2004 NB convertible, triptonic, 2.8L, turbo. I love it, but I've been hearing a lot about these cars having a reputation of transmissions busting after 70k miles, and I'm at 76k. I know that replacing or rebuilding a transmission can cost around $5k, which I frankly can't afford as I'm a student. Replacing the timing belt and all the other frequent maintenance that come with a VW I can handle and do in my own garage, but a failed transmission would kill me.

I've heard lots of different rumors, like that triptonic transmissions don't have problems, and that 1.8L engines have more problems, etc, so I'm coming to the beetle experts. How high are the chances that the trans is going to go out, and what's the truth about how often the transmissions do go out?

I hope you guys have some good news for me, because I've really gotten attached to this little car.:D
