Meeshka you will love this forum--Everyone is wonderful about helping each other. I am so happy your problem is fixed!!

So here is mine--as of yesterday :*(

After detailing her (sore fingers today!), we took her around the town with the top down with for sale signs in the windows to let her sell her cute little self... Got a lot of looks but no calls :*(

When we got home & went to raise the top, I got the little car icon flashing and dinging as usual above the rearview mirror, don't remember if the windows adjusted or not...but NO sound from the top motor! Dead silence. Only the dinging & flashing icon continues.

So I search the beetle forum and found a thread on "computer reset top." I did it and it did not change anything. So I did it again. Nothing. I covered her up and walked away before I'd do something I'd regret.

This morning I put the key in the ignition and turn the ignition on (but not the engine) and the car icon light is blinking and dinging above the rearview mirror. So I tried the switch to raise the top, and the windows did not even adjust. No response from the top motor. Yikes!

So I tried the windows ritual again, and nothing changes.

Found the ritual in an NBF post from 2009:
Get in, close the door. Start the car, and make sure the windows are rolled down. Turn off the car. Start the car again. Use the master switch for the windows and roll them all up at once, and hold the switch even after they're all up, then push the switch to roll them all down completely, continue holding the switch, and turn off the car while holding the switch. Restart the car and try the top.

I will try pushing down on the top firmly a few times to see if that might fix it--I had to do that when I first got the car and the top didn't want to go all the way down. Maybe something is just lost. I have the VAG reader but could not find where there would be an electrical code in the menu??

Any ideas are welcome!

Went out to press down on the folded top to see if it needed to click down and I can't get it to click down even if I sit on it, and I can literally lift it on both sides, so it's not completely open. Can't drive it like that! Yesterday when we drove it around the village we didn't get any alarms, so it had to be completely down then. I don't know what to think. Tried to raise it again just now, nothing--no clicking, no motor sounds. Could this be a fuse? A circuit?
Problem solved thanks to HOURS and HOURS hunting for posts to similar threads on here, and thanks to the person who posted a reference to the video, and thanks to the moderators who didn't delete that very old post! And thanks to Ross Tech for the video!!

I bet the VW dealerships hate you guys. ;)

Although it was for an 04' which has the mechanical flaps (my '05 doesn't have these flaps), my 6 year old was my helper who held up the corner of the top while I used the switch to raise it up, and viola! ::dances around:: A MIRACLE!!

Now to save you all in having to spend nearly two days as I just did to research all the vague posts to find a solution to a problem with a top which can RUIN your day and cause nightmares all night as you toss and turn, moderators please leave this thread up and hopefully the next time someone experiences the craziest nonsensical most puzzling behavior EVER from their electric top, they will find this <very specific> post and solve their problem QUICKLY.

I guess anyone with a power top should just go ahead and purchase a new F171 switch unit to keep in the glove box. It isn't a question of IF the switch will fail, but rather WHEN it will fail.

Can you send me the info also thanks
Watch this ross tech video; to bypass the switch, not a "fix" per se, most likely you may have a bad switch. Scanning for codes with VCDS by Ross Tech; would be a good start and see, if the switch comes up, as being defective.

(bypass F171 switch; procedure @ 5:00): NOTE: this is only a temporary bypass; to allow the top to be closed; the problem, will most likely occur again, until you fix the problem, most likely you need to replace the F171 switch.

Thank goodness you posted this! Had the same issue and your fix with the windows to reset the top worked on the first try!
Thanks so much for keeping this thread open! Sadie now has her top closed, safe and sound! :)
What was the problem and fix?
