Tried a vacuum tool, squeezing hoses. Coolant will not fill. Only about 5 liters out of 9. Anyone have a trick. Using vag scan, am I just afraid engine too hot before thermo.opens?

So, how did you flush the cooling system? Why do you think it isn’t full? What vacuum fill tool are you using and where is the coolant level in the bottle/tank? Is the car over heating?

Well, drained old coolant. It holds 9 liters, and the tool vacuumed and no leaks. Tool is a guage tightened into reservoir, and the vacuum is suppose to refill. Coolant is a bit over max line. It gets hot to touch, scan tool said temp. was at 200F.
How much did you drain out though? Not all the coolant will come out of the system - it will be trapped in the block, etc.
Well,as you know, it was an ongoig process. when I changed thermos. and temp.sensor, all those lines emptied, and drained raditor. and empty reservoir. I can squeeze upper hose and feel gushing and bubbles come out reservoir. So, when upper hose from radiator to sensor . I think all coolant came out.
That sounds normal to me; levels are typical with my Airlift vac filler tool and temps are not out of the normal range (are the cooling fans coming on)?

If the vac tool was working correctly; all the air should be removed from the cooling system?

Well tomorrow I,ll scan it and see. New battery needs scan-ing. Thanks you all and have a good night...
Any updates?

Yeah, I know,"undo" oil cooler hose to drain block. But, after couple days (rain to stop),I relieved the radiator again and nearly a gallon came out so I figured it pretty well drained. I think if nothing else, to drain again and put more psi to my vacuum tool, because the tool worked well, only did not take all coolant before psi ran out. (Yeah, worried about fans, going to check electrical connections,)

I use the UView Airlift 550000; i always do, two vacuum cycles, for a correct fill.

Using OEM UView AIRLIFT Tool To Refill Coolant System - YouTube

Believe it or not; the VW service manual, actually recommends the use if the vacuum fill tool, for a correct coolant fill, to eliminate air from the system.

It's cheapest find $40 off E...y, unbranded. I have to close off air, disconnect, and plug in vacuum tube. I,m getting 22 psi on guage.

Ok, if the tool is new to you; you might review the instructions and make sure you follow the procedures. When, I first got my UView Airlift, there was a bit of a learning curve, to figure out how it worked, what it took to get a successful air purge/fill of the cooling system but once I had it connected right and followed the instructions, it worked great, It successfully purged all the air out of the system and a total fill operation, was a snap (remember: I always do two vacuum fill cycles).
Please, tell me how to do two vacuum fills?
Umm, first please tell us, which vacuum tool you bought and then, have you followed the instructions? I have no clue, which yours is; I use my UView Airlift and use it, as shown in the above video. I just run the vacuum fill procedure two times and do this, to confirm, that all the air is out of the system and the coolant is full.

If you want to have us help you; you might use your phone and video you going through the use of the tool and that way, we can see what the problem is? You could post the video to youtube and that way, we are all on the same page, you can describe the problem and show us, as you use the tool, pull vacuum, suck the coolant in, etc.? Its hard to help, when we do not know the tool you are using or seeing, what steps you are taking to try to pull vac/fill the cooling system.
I have taken this 2.5 engine apart so many times, I think I'll get a "Mahler" thermostat, and be sure. As far as the vac, refill tool ( its the cheapest you'll find on e..y. Could not get my camera to post picture. Have a great holiday.
Typically, VW oem thermostats; would be a Mahle/Behr brand.

As to the vac fill tool; do you have a internet link to it, on Amazon or wherever you bought it from?
