I have had my bug for a little over a year now and i have been having problems with leaks in the cooling system , I've have had a new water outlet heart flange thing put on new thermostat and the radiator was plugged up so that was boiled out and the leaks are gone BUT drive it down the road and and the red temp light comes on which is leading me to believe the water pump is going out but the mechanic it took it to (not a vw guy)he filled it back up with water because it might be needing a water pump why waste a whole bunch of coolant do you think its the water pump??? I'm not a vw guy I'm a gm guy but this car was gifted to me . PLEASE HELP Y'ALL

Water pump failures are common; the quickest way to check it, is by removing the coolant flange and the thermostat. This will give you access to the impeller and you can see if it is cracked or spinning on the shaft (the original impellers are composite plastic). Check out these videos; for the common failure and easy checks for good/bad water pump performance.
