Hello everyone, even though I've posted before, I am basically a newb when it comes to these New Beetles.

I have just "acquired" a 1998 NB in a really light blue. (I put acquired in brackets because it was my sister's but she never got her license, so I'm using it for my winter car.) It has a 4 speed "slush box" and some American Racing Rims. Unfortunatly the car was in an accident and never fixed properly so there are quite a few problems Most of them fixed though. Anyways I didn't make this thread to tell you about my car I have some questions.

1. What is a good air intake? Are the cheap ones off of ebay any good?- All I am looking for is a decently priced intake that quickens response and makes it sounds cooler. Not expecting any HP gains, plus I don't need more HP for winter.

2. Exhaust/Muffler- Can anyone tell me a good muffler for an automatic. I put "exhaust" as well but only if there is a cheap system. Either or, I don't want anything loud but something that makes the car stand out. I have a magnaflow on my summer car and I love the deep tone it puts out, even for a 4 cyl.

3. Is there any more quick/cheap"ish" mods that I can do to this thing?- I have a Ford Escort as a winter car and I had alot of parts that I could swap off of other car for suspension upgrades, engine performance....etc etc. Is there anything of this nature for NBs? ECU chips?

Anyways, sorry if I have hurt your eyes with all my typing but I like to make myself clear.

Also I tried serching but this "search" function on this website doesn't seem to work as well as the one on feoa.net (my escort site). Maybe I am not looking/searching for the right things.

Cheap intake?

Find the make your own (SRI) Short Ram Intake. Buy a Dry Flow cone, since K&N filters have that oil. If you dont do it properly, it can mess with the MAF.

Cheap Exhaust? Cheap Cherry Bomb Turbo Muffler (my Mk3 had one installed) $20 at almost any Auto Store. Cut the resinator out. Get it all welded in.

Other cheap mods? Refer to Cheap intake.

I've been told that K&N destroy MAF's as well. However, I've been running one in mine for 2 years now, and no issues, or CEL lights.

If cleaned properly, you shouldnt have any issue with a K&N. You cant oil it up and then put it back in there right away. Let it sit overnite, and let it dry. Therefore the chances of the fibers getting stuck and clogging the sensor go away. Mine works great. Just give it 1-2 days before putting it back in.

When it comes to a Volkswagen, there really isnt anything "cheap". Its not a Ford or Honda, where you can just slap things together and they magically workout.
You wont get a deep throaty sound from an air intake like a Honda either. They are much quieter. Throttle response is all your gonna feel, a little bit of sound, but not alot.

I would have the car checked for codes before you start throwing money into it on performance mods. Especially with the 4 speed auto. Good Luck!!!!!

Thanks man. I am just going to make a cheap intake from that link the guy posted above. I checked the car for codes and got "0135 02 Heater Circuit". For that I could get a new 02 sensor but my teacher (Previous VW dealer) told me not to bother due to the fact that it will not need to pass E-test soon (Just did it last May). I am not expecting anything amazing from this car but I want to make some improvements. Also about the filter, I usually use dry filters on my escort and they work great

It's not a really baby blue, it's that Light Blue Metallic. I've seen pictures on here before of the same colour. When I see it on the weekend I will take pictures and post them. Maybe in the Photo forms.

Haha, not gonna lie, the picture is gonna disappoint. The car "appears" as though it has not been taken care of, even though it has Was in an accident and they screwed up the clear coat. Now it's peeling. I'm fixin' it though Now I've just got to figure out a good name for it. I'll let you guys see a pic then maybe you could help me

Mine needs a new clutch, new pads and rotors, new ECT, new airbag harness, new shocks & springs, new key fob, new starter, and it appears the valve seals might be burnt.

I named mine P.O.S

Already did the front wheel bearings, new waterpump and belt, cylinder head flange, new breather hose, new battery, tranny flush, actuator and cable for fuel lid release, MAF.

Most of it in the last 6 months. Hence the name. it just clicked over to 140K

As I said, it's a colour I've seen before on these forms and see regularly around where I live. Lol Its nothing special. Luckily mine doesn't have that many problems! Going in to work on it on Sunday Take it for a drive too!
