I've had issues with this car several times. Now i'm experiencing startup problems. It's at a reliable VW auto repair shop and they have been struggling with a new battery constantly draining. Several attempts later they have come up with the alarm system and says it has to go to a dealership. Does that sound about right? As i have ABSOLUTELY no trust in dealerships from past experiences

Welcome to the site; battery drains and draws are common. If you want to try to repair it yourself; I would look into buying a vw scan tool (check out VCDS or a VAG 401 on amazon) and start by trying to find which component, is causing the draw (the stereos and monsoon amplifiers are common culprits).
