Greetings,

I plan on keeping Peep (the tragically Sunflower Yellow 2004 GL 2.0) for at least 2 years as my DD.

I'd like to get a better diagnostic tool for engine management either standalone/handheld, laptop or bluetooth/android. I have a generic OBDII reader but it isn't much help.

What does everyone recommend? (budget friendly)

Thank you.

Sure! That's easy. Just get an ELM327 adapter on ebay or Amazon for less than $15. ELM327 is a standard for an interface between OBDII and bluetooth. Then get the OBDFusion app for Android which is $3. That will give you pretty much the equivalent of a full scan tool on your Android device for less than $20.

There are freeware "gauge"-type programs out there that will display the OBDII parameters for you, but OBDFusion does much more.

On the low end; non vw specific level, check out the ELM 327 on amazon.com and a app, for your portable device (wifi:ios/bluetooth: android phone or tablet). I would look at the "mini" version; as the tend to not get caught on your foot or bump your knee. Check out obd fusion; for a app:

For VW specific; check out a stand alone hand held scanner VAG 401 on amazon or the vw factory level tool, VCDS by Ross Tech which requires a Windows based pc to run.

Check it out and let us know how it works out.

One thing everyone needs to realize is RARELY is there a single tool solution.

My guess the OBDII portion is not so great. You will still probably want OBDFusion and it the App is only $3.99. It will probably work with the interface you listed.

I have not purchased or used either one of these scan tools; having said that, they seem to have similar capabilities. If you purchase a genuine USA Autel product; the support will be better but feedback from their support has been mixed. The Xtool 401 is a Chinese based support product and that probably; is one of the reasons it is only $50. In that case; most likely email based and of questionable quality or responsiveness.

If you are looking for long term solution, that is continually updated for the latest cars and real USA based support to back up your scan tool (from people who truly know the VAG line of cars); I would consider VCDS from Ross Tech. As with anything; you get what you pay for.

If you are looking for something simple, not VW specific and inexpensive; check out a elm327 and a app like obd fusion.
