Door Electrics

I'm posting here as my bug is a 2000 1.8T, but this may be pertinent to other bug models. First let me say that I suspect the wire bundle from the door to the car body. Here's what's happening...

All the switch and the door lights work on the driver's side door, but I'm not able to raise or lower the window, the mirrors are not adjustable (left or right) with the switches, and the door lock doesn't work using the fob. Also, when locking the car, the passenger door locks, and the parking lights flash, but the driver's door does not. When the car is locked using the fob, the horn does not give it's "beep" and the alarm indicator light by the driver's lock does not blink.

With the door open, I was able to push down on the wire bundle (in the rubber sleeve) and could get the door to lock and the window / mirrors to work. This little bit of meat-balling no longer works. The door is completely dead except for the switch and door lights. If the problem is the wire bundle or the body end plug / socket, is there an easy way to get to it? To me it looks as if I need to disassemble the lower panel of the dashboard and maybe the side panel where the hood release handle is. All the connections in the door are good.

Anyone else with this issue? What did you do to fix it? Thanks :)

door locks

I had the same issue several years ago. It turned out to be the door assembly was bad. This is very, very common on the 2000+ models and there are several posts all over the internet with ways to fix it. In my case I followed a post that said take the assembly apart and look at the 3 micro switches and the connections to them. They turn out to break the solder connections after a few years. I gave my assembly to a co worker with the explanation of what to look for. He gave my the assembly back 3 days later and said several solder points were broken and some line sections were cracked. He repaired all of them and now every works again. My alarm functions correctly, my fuel pump primes when I open the door, my locks work off the key fob, ETC. I also got a door assembly from the JY because this is very common so wanted a spare for when it happens again.

This DIY for removing Window Regulator and the Door Lock Control Module might be helpful.

Depending on your DIY Skill and if your budget is not to tight, you can simply replace the DLCM as opposed to soldering the pieces back together.
Thanks for the feedback guys... and sorry I took so long to respond. Been a really busy week at work. D2Beetle, I've done the window regulator so I'm "too" familiar with what's involved there...lol I did have the door panel off to check The connections within the door. They all look ok.

forcedfedbug, Thanks for the tip. My issue is actually access to the wiring harness in the body. I can only get the interior panel part way off as the hood release handle is preventing me from doing that. How is the hood release handle removed? I can't seem to find a way to do it.

Thanks again guys...

Thanks so much for that diagram Ron. I never would have found that clip on my own and how it was attached just left me scratching my head. Now I'll be able to get to the internal part of the harness and see what's what. All the door interior connections look good. I may just replace the whole wiring harness rather than try to repair depending on how easy the pins are to get at on that end. I also want to use a test light to make sure it's not just a broken / cracked / corroded wire. Thanks for the help guys! :)
