'98 2.0. Car runs better when the CEL is illuminated. It was diffucult to start after I erased the codes and it smells like it is running rich. I'm thinking that a bad MAF may be causing all 3, but there is no change in how it runs if I unplug it.
Thoughts???

1. what are your fuel trim readings? These can help you figure out if it is (maf or leaks). In your case; based on the above links/trouble codes; you have possibly both!

A. Test Your maf
B. check for vacuum/hose leaks

Here are pages; that shows how to test your maf and diagnose these types of codes/issues:

Part 1 -MAF Sensor Test: Jetta, New Beetle (5 wire type).

Note: I just got done working on a 2.0l Jetta; a very common problem is the hose that goes from the manifold to the fuel regulator, they get old crack and fall off.

A faulty O2 sensor can trip these codes (pre-cat sensor)
Update: MAF replaced and all is well again.:D
