Engine Air Intake Connector Pipe for 2003 2.0 GLS Convertible discontinued, need replacement ideas!

I’m a year into finally getting to what I hope is the root of all my constant check engine lights and MAF errors. Bought my money pit 2003 VW vert 2.0 GLS baby and someone had glued all over a part I now know as 1c0129684AN otherwise told to me by the dealership as literally “PIPE”. This part is now discontinued and to be found nowhere on the internet at all. I’ve looked everywhere so now I have to find an alternative. Looked up the code hoping to get more specifics and it just says it came with the cold climate package and is an Engine Air Intake Connector Pipe. My car now shakes, hesitates, and overall (after already getting new coil, brakes, spark plugs, new battery, MAF sensors, air filter, and exhaust tubing replacement, and more I can’t even remember) I’m afraid of going without this part any longer now that it’s getting colder. My car takes forever to warm up and basically hates this season. I asked another mechanic who suggested that I buy one not for colder climate ( he said colder climate one is thicker) and have my mechanic wrap thermal mechanic tape around it. So I found 1C0-129-609-B for 1998-2007 that I think will work. I’m not sure it’s a solution —like as in I’m not sure this is the alternative someone who knows more about mechanics would actually use. I did hear that 2003-2005 convertible 2.0 is a special case. Of course it would be (deep sigh). Anyone have any experience with replacing these?

Have you tried to find a good used one? Here is a used car parts search engine; www.car-parts.com. What is wrong with your old one? I believe this is hard plastic right? If you have a photo of the damage; post it up, might be repairable but obviously, a replacement would be better.

If you can find another good used one; that would be a good way to go or repair what you have. Your other part #, migtht work as well; I know, that on some 2.0L's I have worked on, have a small heather that heats up the pcv (valve), so it doensn't ice up in cold weather conditions? I don't know the differences; I guess, you would have to compare the two, in real life and see, what VW changed, the thicker aspect, could be a possiblity or possibly the heater aspect of the pcv, maybe part of the change?

As to your running issues; if there is a big vacuum leak, from the intake hose being split or broken, that could be a issue, causing a rough idle problem. Otherwise, you may have other issues; to diagnose the problem, the first step would be to scan for trouble codes. Post up any trouble codes you are getting; you may need, to confirm problems, by looking at things like fuel trims, maf readings and confirm, other aspects of the engine data, to see what is going on.

You have replaced ALLOT of parts; the quality of the new parts you installed are crucial, after market parts, can make the car run worse and this is particularly common, for example with the MAF sensors, Bosch is the oem and should be used as a replacement. Many will buy a cheaper aftermarket brand MAF and the car will run horribly, as they cannot read the air flow accurately and/or fail prematurely, they can be defective, right out of the box. If you still have your original Bosch/VW MAF; many have reinstalled them and fixed drivability issues, that were brought on by the "new" MAF.

Give us more info about the damage to the intake plastic pipe and the parts you replaced, history of the running issues, any current trouble codes and we can go from there. Thanks.

You’re right about these aftermarket parts. I believe I did use a Bosch MAF as a replacement. But the mechanic who installed that has been shown to be questionable. I reached out to the dealership again and they said the part 1C0-129-609-B 1998-2007 I was trying to use in place of discontinued one is for a different position in the car according to this diagram they emailed me. The part I need to replace is in the #8 spot on picture....but on vw parts site the exact part is in a #6 spot. It’s pretty confusing for me as I’m not a mechanic and my mechanic is ok, but I think frustrated with my Beetle logic and just wants a part to put on that I come up with. I’m not tied to have OEM at this point. I just want a solution. He’s mentioned getting a cold air intake whole system to replace this one part which seems costly and over the top to me. I’m not trying to turn her into a race car. Or spend unnecessarily.

The part I was going to use as a replacement in my original post is in position #20 according to this diagram.

Thanks for referring me to that car part source!!! That’s so helpful. Saves me a lot of physically combing every junkyard which is intimidating as this is my first car. The part I need is essentially a “Connector Pipe” specific air intake hose (as I’ve learned the hard way there are so many kinds of generalized air intake hoses). I’ll try to upload a photo of the damaged part. But from just looking at it, it appears glued over by past owner as a repair. My mechanic just added more of the black glue stuff to hold me off for a while until I found a part that works to replace it.

Thanks again for any advice you can offer. Here is a closer photo of the glued over part

Hmmm, you can probably repair it with plastic epoxy and reinforce the repair with extra plastic, possibly pop rivet it to secure it along with the epoxy as it dries; if it comes undone again, while you look for another one.

As to the engine idle problems; you might get the car scanned for trouble codes and post any you find. Do you have a scan tool to use(?); most auto parts stores will scan your car for free.

Any info on the parts brands for the parts installed and what is the history of the car (how long you have had it, running bad, repairs done, mechanic work completed, etc.)?

I think your photo, is showing the “heater” the has a plug in it; to keep the pvc valve and hose from icing up, during the winter.

I looked at car-part.com and see they have a 2004 2.0L beetle part that looks like mine ( well at least the picture does). But it’s under “ air flow meter”.

I went on to car-part.com but I’m confused as to how to search this part. Would I look under Intake Manifolds, Air Cleaner, Air Flow Meter, or Air Box? There are a lot of different categories they have listed under air systems. I saw under Air Flow Meter a 2004 vert 2.0L that looks like mine from the photo, and has the part in the photo I think . Never did the junkyard before, and trying to figure out what to even call the part so I don’t get the wrong one if I call and they have no clue about the specific part number. This is the 2004 car picture they put up

Being a generic search engine and not vw specific; it can be a challenge to figure out, how to search for things. The pipe you need; goes from the airbox to the throttle body, correct? If that is the case, you could try communicating with local junkyards in your area; that show, there is a similar New Beetle in their junkyard with the same 2.0L engine and hopefully, find the part you need?

As shown above, the VW parts site (www.parts.vw.com), is referring to the part as a "Engine Air Intake Hose"; in your case, I believe it is made of plastic?

Would you say, that the broken part of the intake hose; is where the rubber hose connects to the plastic nipple here?

Hard to say, I guess it looks broken where it connects to the sensor and the ring near air sensor both places are wear the glue is

So it ends I they don’t have the part needed at any junk yard in my driving distance and no where online either. Is a cold air intake system a suitable replacement? Or is there a universal air intake system that’s flexible that anyone has heard of that I can customize for this one broken part that is ( in these cold months) about to become a major problem)?
Someone has a used one somewhere or one that will work; just a matter of finding it, they sold a ton of these cars, many end up in junk yards.

That being said, is it really damaged to the point of not repairable or usable? I would stick with a stock part; you might remove the part and closely examine the damage. Then, do a solid, repair and be able to use the original part long term, after a good quality repair solution.

Lately, I've been using a hot staple gun to repair plastic parts on my New Beetle with impressive results. I got mine on Amazon for about $20 and some extra staples.
